DISCUSSION QUESTION #3


3. Why might there be poverty in South Africa today? Provide evidence from the book to support your answer.

The government just stopped segregation and there is going to be people who still want it, so it will leave a lot of people homeless because they will still treat the blacks like they did before and try to downgrade them again. A lot more people are going to need help from the government financially because they will be poor from having to build houses and buy new things for their houses and moving from the bad areas and it will make the government possibly shut down because it will give probably almost all of it's money to the people. Whites can also still discriminate illegally in private and try to bring back segregation which could lead more people to poverty. Segregation had boundaries but now since everyone is treated as a white person,it has a lot more freedom and some people could spend all their money and do things that could leave them broke because of the freedom they have gained. Poverty will probably rise in the years but then as soon as the government is back on track, it will become a moderate or low level.
